Carmen Electra, From “Worst Dressed” to Fashion Pioneer

Image
Carmen Electra is synonymous with the glitzed-up skimpy looks of the late ’90s and 2000s. While perhaps best known today for her roles in Baywatch and blockbuster hits like Scary Movie (2000), the perpetually smoky-eyed bombshell left her hometown in Ohio for Los Angeles with few expectations. “I just came here to be a dancer,” says Electra via phone. “Not even in front, just a backup dancer.” She went on to meet Prince, who promoted her solo singing career, leading to her 1993 self-titled album. A television and film career, along with celebrity, followed quickly behind. While she had legions of fans, Electra’s bold, barely-there clothes made her a perennial presence on “Worst Dressed” lists. Twenty years later, Electra’s style has come full circle. Celebrities ranging from Nicki Minaj to Kendall Jenner are delving into the glammed-out noughties barely-there looks. “I once wore a dress that had little metal pieces going all they way down the side so you couldn’t really wear panti

Why Yujin Seo Is the Next Korean Model Poised to Go Global

Image
A new slew of Korean models dominated this Fashion Week circuit, so naturally, the hunt for the next stunner from Seoul is on. As the city’s Spring 2018 shows begin today, one particularly striking unknown is worth watching: Yujin Seo, the 17-year-old with the one-of-a-kind face that has taken the local fashion industry by storm. In a makeshift tent behind the DDP show venue, the Seoul-born and raised model sits down for a quick chat between fittings, wearing a white lace Gucci dress and cradling a bottle of green tea. She has the shy, sweet manner of a high school student (which she is) who has suddenly found herself in desperate demand. But no one forced her into the industry; Seo fell in love with it after watching Korea’s Next Top Model Season Five. “It just spoke to me,” she says. “I watched one season, and then I binged them all.” After that, she promptly enrolled in modeling classes and was selected by her agency ESteem’s management team a year later; now she juggles a ful

Designers Are Bringing the Comforts of Home to the Runway With Actual Pillows and Blankets

Image
In troubled times, the greatest luxury might just be staying home. Between the fraught political climate, a string of natural disasters, and the nonstop terrible news around the world, having a warm, cozy sanctuary to return to is as comforting as it gets. Perhaps it explains why everyone is so into hygge, and why furniture stores are selling out of Mongolian lamb pillows and sheepskin rugs (all the better to binge-watch Netflix). I also recently saw an advertisement on Instagram for a 20-pound blanket that costs almost $300 and is designed to “reduce stress and anxiety by mimicking the sensation of being hugged or embraced.” That sounds sort of like wearing your dog’s ThunderShirt, but then, who isn’t feeling anxious these days? Now, the allure of surrounding yourself with fluff and warmth at home is trickling up to the runways. Last season, it started with duvet-like puffer coats, upholstery fabrics, and, most curiously, actual blankets folded over models’ arms at Céline. This s

Introducing Khalid, 19-Year-Old VMAs Winner and Gucci Addict

Image
It’s no surprise that Khalid has stepped into the spotlight this year. The 19-year-old singer has an origin story involving Kylie Jenner (she played his song “Location” in a Snapchat video and gave it a heavy boost) and crowds who lose their composure at the mere whisper of “Khalid” at his sold-out shows. But despite the smash success of his debut studio album, American Teen, which is currently ranked number four on the Billboard 200 chart and earned him a win at tonight’s MTV Video Music Awards, the teen still expresses shock. “When I started writing, I said, ‘I don’t know how to do this. I don’t know if it sounds good,’ ” he says. “Coming from being an underdog or being told that something wasn’t for you over and over repeatedly, it took a lot out of me. It took a lot of my self-confidence.” It is the last thing you would expect to hear from someone with a hit record and a slew of A-list collaborations under his belt (a song with Calvin Harris, an upcoming tour with Lorde). Natalie Bloomingdale Launches An E-Boutique of Her Favorite Things

Image
More than just a clothes horse, Natalie Bloomingdale is a patron of the sartorial arts. After years sporting the Dallas-based label Tish Cox and serving as an unofficial brand ambassador, Bloomingdale became accustomed to numerous inquiries from fashion-curious passerby. “I’ve had women run after me in airports, come to my table at restaurants, and last month, a woman waited for me to exit a ladies’ room just to ask me who I was wearing and where they could find it,” she says. In her response, Bloomingdale would both delight and disappoint: identifying Tish Cox (a designer with a philanthropic bent, her pieces are constructed by blind or visually impaired artisans from the Dallas Lighthouse) and that, unfortunately, she does not retail online. “I realized that there was an opportunity to give more people, outside of her cult-like Dallas following, access to her pieces and her mission, so I decided to create a site for her,” Bloomingdale explains, and so The SIL was born. The SIL,

Beyoncé Takes Louis Vuitton x Supreme—and New-Mom Swagger—to the Next Level

Image
No one dresses for date night quite like Beyoncé, and for a night out at West Hollywood foodie destination Sushi Park with husband Jay-Z, the new mother of twins brought a bit of runway chic to a strip-mall setting. Beyoncé arrived dressed in a striped wrap dress by contemporary label Alexis with a plunging neckline, puffed sleeves, and seersucker print—and made it her own thanks to the use of several statement accessories. Layering on gold necklaces, a pair of white cat-eye sunglasses, and a logo-covered Louis Vuitton x Supreme clutch, Beyoncé added swagger to a summer style that could have seemed standard. Knowing how to spice up a look is a skill, but sharing an ensemble creatively on social media takes talent. And in addition to posting a pair of sultry snaps taken from across the table that night, Beyoncé gave fans an all-angles video of her outfit set to Yo Gotti’s “Rake It Up,” taking her selfie game to the next level. Her biggest accomplishment with the look, though, might

Kylie Jenner Shuts Down Her Birthday With Some Help From Kendall, Khloé, and Kim

Image
Kylie Jenner turns 20 years old today, and last night in Los Angeles, the beauty entrepreneur—it’s been reported her Kylie Cosmetics line will gross $1 billion—celebrated her first steps into adulthood en famille. Throwing the youngest Jenner a surprise party were sisters Kim Kardashian West, Khloé Kardashian, Kendall Jenner, and of course momager Kris. And while the Kardashian-Jenner-Wests have previously made their mark in coordinated fashion at Kanye West’s fashion shows and for various holidays (all white for Easter), last night’s festivities saw each girl highlight her own personal style. For birthday girl Kylie Jenner, this meant a mashup of high-low dressing. Her monochrome ensemble was given a sporty touch, thanks to a sports bra peeking out from under a track jacket, while sneakers grounded the look with a fresh pop. Khloé kept things short in a simple LBD with a plunging neckline, while sisters Kim and Kendall opted for metallics. Kardashian West relied on a familiar si
