From Labyrinth to Zoolander, David Bowie’s Most Stylish Movie Roles

There is no questioning David Bowie’s status as a fashion icon, but his influence was more far-reaching. Though he appeared in only a handful of films during his lifetime, Bowie managed to leave his sartorial mark on each role he took on. Playing FBI agents, vampires, and goblin royalty with a swagger few could match, the star, who would have been 71 today, managed to make even the most unusual characters seem stylish. Here, a look back at seven of his most fashionable roles and the iconic costumes he wore on-screen.

As Jareth, the baby-snatching goblin king, Bowie shares the screen with Muppets and a teenaged Jennifer Connelly, but there’s no taking your eyes off of him and his over-the-top costumes. Designed by Brian Froud, Jareth’s getups come complete with ruffled blouses, jeweled embellishments, and sweeping capes ideal for ballroom dancing. Finishing it all off with eyeliner and an ’80s mullet, he’s easily the most fashion-forward Jim Henson creation.
